River Cruising: What Happens When Water Levels Are Too Low?
By Carolyn Johnson, Travel Advisor – Marshall
From a well-coordinated ship swap to revised excursions and travel arrangements, the experience offered me a firsthand look at how river cruising adapts when conditions change.

There’s something special about exploring Europe by river cruise. You unpack your suitcase, settle into your cabin, and watch charming towns, vineyards, and historic castles pass by. It’s a convenient way to experience multiple destinations without constantly changing hotels.
But there’s one important thing to know before booking: River conditions can change your itinerary.
I experienced this firsthand during an October 2026 AmaWaterways Romantic Danube cruise. Low water levels meant our ship couldn’t navigate the entire planned route, resulting in a ship change, revised excursions, and some unexpected travel arrangements. Despite those changes, it was still a wonderful trip—and a valuable lesson in the realities of river cruising.
When Low Water Levels Change Your River Cruise

About two weeks before departure, AmaWaterways notified us that low water levels would affect our itinerary. We were given two options: cancel our trip and receive a future cruise credit for the full amount we’d paid, or continue with the revised itinerary plus a future AmaWaterways cruise credit worth 40% of our original cruise fare.
We chose to go, knowing that further adjustments were possible.
Our itinerary included additional time in Austria, some sightseeing by bus rather than ship, and changes to several excursions. Although it wasn’t the journey we’d originally expected, AmaWaterways communicated the adjustments and worked to keep the experience enjoyable.
One thing this experience reinforced is that an itinerary change doesn’t have to mean a disappointing vacation! AmaWaterways did an excellent job communicating the changes, coordinating the details, and making sure we still had a wonderful experience.
What Is a River Cruise Ship Swap?
One of the most interesting parts of our trip happened on day four, when we transferred from AmaStella to AmaMora to bypass a section of the Danube that couldn’t be navigated.
We packed our bags and left them outside our cabin before heading out on an excursion. While we were sightseeing, AmaWaterways transported our luggage to the second ship. By the time we finished lunch on the new ship, our cabin was ready, with our belongings waiting for us!
Our cruise manager stayed with the group, and our onboard accounts transferred seamlessly. Aside from repacking and saying goodbye to the first crew, the process was surprisingly easy.
River cruising is often promoted as an unpack-once vacation, so a ship swap isn’t ideal. But it can be an effective way to continue a cruise when water levels interfere with the original route.

Unexpected Excursions and Memorable Experiences

Some originally scheduled activities were canceled, but the revised itinerary also introduced experiences we hadn’t anticipated.
We visited Greinburg Castle, hiked to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle for beautiful views over the Wachau Valley, and had opportunities for additional sightseeing in Vienna, including a classical concert at the historic House of Strauss.
I especially appreciated AmaWaterways’ variety of excursion options. Many ports offered different walking tours and more active experiences, giving travelers choices based on their interests and comfort levels.
Not every replacement excursion will appeal to everyone, but some of my favorite memories came from experiences that weren’t part of the original itinerary.
The AmaWaterways Experience Onboard
We got to experience two ships instead of one, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time aboard AmaStella and AmaMora. The ships were comfortable, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was attentive.
Dining was a highlight, especially the included Chef’s Table experience with its multi-course meal and wine pairings. I was also impressed by how carefully the dining team accommodated travelers with food allergies. AmaWaterways also did a great job of bringing the local culture onboard. We enjoyed local food and wine throughout the journey, a historic speaker, and special entertainers singing and playing everything from opera to The Sound of Music.
Even with less sailing than planned, we enjoyed beautiful destinations, fascinating history, wonderful food, and plenty of opportunities to explore.
The biggest inconvenience came at the end of the cruise, when the revised itinerary required a lengthy bus transfer to reach our departure airport. It’s a reminder that itinerary changes can affect flights and transportation arrangements, as well as sightseeing.

Was It Still a Great River Cruise?

For sure, and we’d go again in a heartbeat!
Our journey wasn’t exactly what we’d planned, but it was still filled with memorable experiences. We enjoyed beautiful destinations, fascinating history, wonderful food, and plenty of opportunities to explore four different countries.
Before booking, consider which destinations matter most to you, how comfortable you’d be with itinerary changes, and what options your cruise line offers if river conditions interfere. We knew we wanted to explore Germany, Austria, and the surrounding countries, but we weren’t focused on specific ports or activities. This flexibility served us well as our itinerary was modified, and through it all, we knew we could count on AmaWaterways to take care of us with excellent service and a great onboard experience.
Does It Matter Which River Cruise Line You Choose?
Absolutely! One of my biggest takeaways from this trip was how much the cruise line matters when things don’t go according to plan.
Different river cruise companies handle low water levels in different ways. Some arrange ship swaps, while others rely more heavily on buses and hotel stays or may need to cancel a sailing altogether. Policies, compensation, and the timing of notifications also vary. We met travelers who had experienced a similar Danube itinerary with another cruise line, but their trip involved much more time on buses and in hotels.
We really appreciated how AmaWaterways handled our situation. They communicated the changes two weeks before departure, gave us options, and made the ship swap and revised excursions feel seamless. Best of all, guests enjoyed their revised Danube cruise plus a future AmaWaterways cruise credit worth 40% of their original cruise fare.
This is also a great example of why working with an experienced travel advisor is so valuable. At Bursch Travel, our advisors know the different river cruise lines and can help you choose one that fits your travel style and priorities. And when plans change, we’re here to help you navigate the details, whether that’s reviewing your options, adjusting flights, or coordinating other travel arrangements.
River conditions may be out of everyone’s control, but choosing the right cruise line and having a knowledgeable travel advisor in your corner can make all the difference.
