Is Malta Worth Visiting? My Week Exploring the Mediterranean’s Hidden Gem
By Mike Davidson, President of Bursch Travel
Malta might be one of Europe’s best-kept secrets!
I recently spent a week exploring this beautiful Mediterranean destination, and I came home wondering why more Americans don’t have it on their travel radar. Ancient walled cities, crystal-clear waters, incredible food, and thousands of years of history—all packed into a surprisingly small destination.
My rating? 9.5 out of 10!
From wandering the cobblestone streets of Mdina at sunset to sailing through historic harbors and exploring the neighboring island of Gozo, Malta exceeded my expectations.

What I Loved Most About Malta
The history. Valletta, Malta’s capital, is filled with beautiful architecture, fascinating history, and spectacular harbor views. But one of my favorite experiences was exploring Mdina, the ancient walled city known as the Silent City. Walking its narrow streets at sunset was unforgettable.
The food. The culinary scene was a wonderful surprise. Dinner at ION Harbour, a two-Michelin-star restaurant overlooking Valletta’s harbor, was easily one of the most memorable meals I’ve enjoyed anywhere in Europe.
The adventure. We sailed through Malta’s historic harbors and explored Gozo by buggy. Between the beautiful Mediterranean waters, dramatic scenery, and opportunities for swimming, sailing, and hiking, there’s plenty to enjoy beyond the historic cities.
The culture. Experiencing a local Festa celebration gave me a glimpse into Maltese traditions. These are the moments I especially appreciate when traveling—getting beyond the major attractions and experiencing what makes a destination unique.
Getting to Malta Is Easier Than Ever
Another exciting development is Delta Air Lines’ new nonstop service between New York and Malta.
I experienced this new connection firsthand, and the excitement among locals about welcoming more American visitors was impossible to miss.
Flight schedules are seasonal and subject to change, but this new service creates another convenient option for travelers interested in discovering Malta.

Planning a Trip to Malta? Here’s What I’d Recommend
Is Malta worth visiting?
Absolutely! I gave it a 9.5 out of 10 because of the incredible variety. You can explore ancient cities, enjoy outstanding restaurants, experience local traditions, and spend time on the Mediterranean—all in one vacation.
How many days should you spend in Malta?
I spent a week there and thought it was a great amount of time. We were able to explore Valletta and Mdina, visit Gozo, enjoy time on the water, and experience some wonderful dining without feeling like we were constantly rushing.
What are the must-see attractions?
I’d put Valletta, Mdina, and Gozo at the top of the list. I’d also recommend getting out on the water, enjoying Malta’s restaurants, and experiencing a local Festa celebration if your travel dates line up with one.
Who would enjoy a vacation in Malta?
That’s one of the things I loved most—Malta offers something for so many different travelers. History enthusiasts, food lovers, active travelers, and those who simply want to relax by the Mediterranean can all find something to enjoy.
If you love destinations like Italy, Greece, or Spain but want to experience somewhere different, I’d definitely consider Malta.
Would I Go Back?
Without hesitation!
What surprised me most was how much Malta had to offer in just one week. The combination of history, food, scenery, adventure, and local culture made it a truly memorable trip.
If it isn’t already on your travel list, I think it deserves a spot.
