After an incredible family expedition cruise in the Galápagos, we came home inspired and grateful for the unforgettable experiences we shared. Traveling with our two boys, ages 10 and 12, they called this their “best trip ever!” From awe-inspiring wildlife encounters to customized daily activities, every moment was bucket-list worthy.

Planning a Family Galápagos Cruise? Here’s What I’d Want You to Know
Based on our experience, absolutely! Our boys were 10 and 12 when we traveled, and they called it their best trip ever. Between the wildlife encounters, snorkeling, hiking, and time spent exploring with the naturalists, there was something new to discover every day.
Added bonus – if you’re from the United States, you’re getting to the Galápagos with little to no jet lag! It’s like a water safari without the crabby and sleep-deprived family you may have flying to Africa. WINNING!
We traveled aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ Gemini, which carried just 48 guests. I loved the smaller, more personal atmosphere, the attentive crew, and the opportunities to experience the incredible wildlife up close. It felt adventurous without sacrificing comfort.
No, and that was one of the things we really appreciated! We could choose activities that suited our interests and energy levels, whether that meant hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, or enjoying some downtime onboard. The flexibility made it easier for everyone in our family to enjoy the trip in their own way.
For me, it was swimming with sea turtles! But watching our boys experience giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and playful sea lions was just as memorable. Seeing their curiosity and excitement reminded me why I love traveling together as a family.
Definitely! If your family enjoys nature, wildlife, and exploring new places together, it’s an experience worth considering. Every family travels differently, though, so choosing the right ship, itinerary, and activities is important.
We visited in late March and early April, and I thought the timing was perfect! We were near the end of the warmer, wetter season, so the water was still comfortable for snorkeling and swimming. As the Galápagos moves into its cooler, drier season, ocean temperatures generally drop, even though the weather on land can be cooler and more comfortable for exploring.
There’s really no bad time to visit the Galápagos, but if swimming and snorkeling in warmer water are important to your family, I’d definitely consider March or April. For us, it was a wonderful balance of wildlife encounters, water activities, and adventure!
