Exploring Northern Ireland: Coastal Beauty, Castles & Unforgettable Experiences

By Kristi F, Bursch Travel Advisor

Ireland is one of those places where there’s something beautiful around every corner. I recently had the opportunity to explore Northern Ireland with Brendan Vacations, and between the stunning coastline, charming countryside, fascinating history, and wonderful people, it was a trip I won’t soon forget!

We visited Belfast, explored the Causeway Coast, spent time in Derry, and even enjoyed a luxurious stay at Ashford Castle. Here are a few of my favorite experiences, along with some tips for planning your own Ireland adventure.

Belfast: A City Full of Character

Our journey included time in Belfast, a colorful, bustling city with plenty to explore.

One of our stops was Fish City, an award-winning restaurant known for its sustainably sourced fish and chips. And of course, we couldn’t leave without learning how to pour our own Guinness!

Belfast has a wonderful mix of history, culture, and lively city atmosphere. It’s a great starting point for exploring Northern Ireland.

My Favorite Surprise: Glenshane Country Farm

One of the most memorable experiences of the trip was our visit to Glenshane Country Farm.

We met Jamese McCloy, a fourth-generation sheep farmer, who introduced us to his farm and his incredibly talented sheepdogs.

Watching those dogs work was amazing! They were so well-trained, and Jamese was personable, funny, and full of stories.

We finished our visit with homemade scones and tea, which made the experience even better.

This is absolutely a stop I’d recommend to clients. It’s such a fun way to experience the Irish countryside and meet someone who is keeping local farming traditions alive.

The Causeway Coast: Incredible Scenery and a Little Wind!

Northern Ireland’s coastline was breathtaking. The water was an incredible shade of blue, and the scenery seemed to get better around every turn.

We visited Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which was originally built by salmon fishermen around 250 years ago. Unfortunately, high winds closed the bridge the day we visited, so we weren’t able to cross. The wind also did quite a number on my hair!

Even without crossing, the coastal views were worth the stop. It’s a good reminder that some outdoor experiences in Ireland depend on the weather, so flexibility is important.

Another highlight was the Giant’s Causeway, famous for its remarkable basalt columns and dramatic coastal setting. Our experience included stories of the legendary giant Finn McCool, adding a wonderful layer of folklore to an already spectacular place.

We also made a quick detour to see the Dark Hedges, the beautiful avenue of trees that has become one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed spots.

Derry: Hearing History From Someone Who Lived It

We spent a day in Derry, also known as Londonderry, and took a walking tour with a local guide.

This was one of the most fascinating experiences of the trip. Our guide shared stories about The Troubles from the perspective of someone who had lived through that period of Northern Ireland’s history. There’s something incredibly meaningful about learning a destination’s history directly from the people who experienced it.

We explored the city and its historic walls while gaining a much deeper understanding of its past and present.

A Luxurious Stay at Ashford Castle

Our trip also included a stay at the beautiful Ashford Castle, near Cong in County Mayo, in the Republic of Ireland.

What a place!

My room was absolutely luxurious—and I was told it was one of the smaller rooms! The grounds were gorgeous, the views overlooking Lough Corrib were spectacular, and we had a celebrity sighting.

Between the beautiful countryside, castle atmosphere, and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, it’s a special property for travelers looking to add a little luxury to their Ireland vacation.

Planning a Trip to Northern Ireland? A Few Things to Know

Can you visit Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge on the same trip?

Yes! Both are highlights of Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast and can be included in a well-planned itinerary.

Just remember that Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge may close during high winds or other unfavorable weather conditions. We weren’t able to cross during our visit, so it’s worth keeping your plans flexible.

Is October a good time to visit Ireland?

I thought October was a beautiful time to visit! The countryside was lovely, and I especially enjoyed the scenery and autumn colors. We did encounter strong winds along the coast, so I’d definitely pack layers and a waterproof jacket.

Can you combine Northern Ireland with Ashford Castle?

Yes, and that’s exactly what we did!

Ashford Castle is located in County Mayo in the Republic of Ireland, so it’s not in Northern Ireland itself. But it can make a wonderful addition to a broader Ireland itinerary, especially if you’d like to combine sightseeing with a memorable luxury hotel stay.

Is a guided tour a good way to explore Northern Ireland?

Based on my experience with Brendan Vacations, I think it’s a wonderful option.

Having knowledgeable local guides brought the destinations to life, especially at Giant’s Causeway and in Derry. I also appreciated the opportunity to enjoy unique local experiences, like our visit to Glenshane Country Farm.

Would I Recommend Northern Ireland?

Definitely!

What I loved most was the variety. One day we were exploring a lively city, the next we were watching sheepdogs work on a family farm or admiring the dramatic coastline.

And the people and their stories made the experience even more memorable.

Thinking about a trip to Ireland or Northern Ireland? I’d love to help you plan an itinerary that includes the places and experiences that interest you most, whether that’s beautiful scenery, local culture, historic sites, or a special castle stay.
