Celebrating Our 70th Anniversary On Canyon Spirit

By Lara (Bursch) DeppischJune 2026

There couldn’t have been a more fitting way to celebrate Bursch Travel’s 70th anniversary than by doing what we love most—traveling together.

Earlier this year, our team embarked on Canyon Spirit’s Red Rocks to the Rockies journey, traveling from Salt Lake City to Denver through some of the most spectacular scenery in the American Southwest. Over three unforgettable days, we experienced towering mountain peaks, dramatic red rock landscapes, charming western towns, exceptional cuisine, and, most importantly, the joy of sharing new experiences together.

As travel advisors, we’re fortunate to experience incredible destinations around the world. But this journey reminded us that some of the most breathtaking travel experiences can be found right here in the United States.

First Impressions

Our first glimpse of Canyon Spirit left the entire team impressed.

From the moment we stepped onboard, it was clear this wasn’t simply transportation—it was part of the destination itself. The ride was smooth and scenic, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the food exceeded expectations. Every detail felt thoughtfully designed to help travelers slow down and enjoy the journey.

Those traveling in Premier Class enjoyed access to the lounge car, complete with beverages, light bites, and panoramic views. Being able to move throughout the train, meet fellow travelers, and experience the scenery from different vantage points added another layer to the experience.

First Stop: Moab

Our first destination was Moab, Utah, one of the country’s premier outdoor adventure destinations. Home to Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park, Moab offers endless opportunities for exploration.

Some members of our team ventured out on guided tours. Others rented vehicles to explore on their own. Some simply enjoyed strolling through town and taking in the relaxed atmosphere.

One thing was unanimous: everyone fell in love with Moab.

Whether you’re interested in hiking, photography, off-road adventures, stargazing, or simply soaking in the incredible landscapes, Moab is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.

Crossing Into Colorado

Day two carried us nearly 200 miles from Moab to Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the journey was watching the landscape gradually transform. The red rock canyons of Utah slowly gave way to Colorado’s mountain scenery, creating an ever-changing backdrop throughout the day.

The onboard experience continued to impress. Premium guests were treated to a special afternoon tea service featuring a selection of hot and iced teas accompanied by light bites. It was the perfect excuse to sit back, relax, and watch the scenery unfold beyond the windows.

That evening we arrived in Glenwood Springs, a charming mountain town known for its natural hot springs, historic architecture, and welcoming atmosphere. Our team spent the night at the iconic Hotel Colorado, conveniently located within walking distance of downtown restaurants, shops, and attractions.

Glenwood Springs proved to be one of the hidden gems of the itinerary. Its combination of mountain-town charm and rich history made it the perfect overnight stop before our final day aboard the train.

Through the Heart of the Rockies

Our third and final day aboard Canyon Spirit delivered what many considered the highlight of the entire trip.

Traveling from Glenwood Springs to Denver, we wound through the Rocky Mountains, passing rugged canyon walls, rushing rivers, tunnels, dramatic curves, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the American West.

It was our longest day onboard—and without question, our most scenic.

The service remained impeccable throughout the journey. One of the day’s highlights was a Colorado whiskey tasting offered to Premier Class guests, a new feature on the itinerary that allowed us to sample local spirits while taking in incredible mountain views.

Between the scenery, wildlife sightings, conversations, and onboard experiences, the day felt almost magical.

More Than a Train Journey

While the landscapes were unforgettable, what made this trip especially meaningful was the opportunity to celebrate seven decades of Bursch Travel alongside the people who have helped shape our company.

There were plenty of laughs, a few tears, and countless stories shared as we reflected on the past 70 years. Travel has always been at the heart of who we are, and experiencing this journey together served as a reminder of why we’re so passionate about helping others explore the world.

For 70 years, Bursch Travel has helped travelers create memories across continents and oceans. This trip gave us an opportunity to create a few memories of our own.

Three Tips for Your Canyon Spirit Journey

1. Upgrade to Premier Class

If you’re considering Canyon Spirit, Premier Class is worth the investment. Access to the lounge car, premium beverages, elevated dining experiences, and special onboard offerings like afternoon tea and Colorado whiskey tastings enhanced every day of our journey.

2. Pack Layers and Keep a Camera Handy

One of the most remarkable aspects of this trip is how quickly the scenery changes. You’ll travel from Utah’s red rock landscapes to Colorado’s rugged mountain peaks, often experiencing different temperatures throughout the day. Dress in layers and keep your camera or phone within reach—you won’t want to miss the views.

3. Spend Time in the Lounge Car

While the scenery is incredible from every seat, some of our favorite moments happened in the lounge car. It became a gathering place to enjoy the views, meet fellow travelers, share stories, and fully embrace the relaxed pace of rail travel. Don’t be afraid to get up, move around, and enjoy the journey from different perspectives.

Our Take

Would we recommend Canyon Spirit? Absolutely.

The combination of stunning scenery, exceptional service, comfortable accommodations, and thoughtfully curated destinations creates an experience that feels both relaxing and immersive. It’s an ideal trip for travelers who want to experience the beauty of the American West without the stress of constant packing, driving, or navigating.

As we celebrate 70 years of Bursch Travel, we’re grateful for the travelers, partners, and communities that have been part of our journey. Here’s to the next 70 years of exploration, discovery, and unforgettable memories.

And if our Canyon Spirit adventure has inspired you to experience the magic of rail travel for yourself, we’d love to help. Whether you’re dreaming of the American West, the Canadian Rockies, or iconic rail journeys around the world, our team can help you find the perfect itinerary.
