Gran Real Caribe in

Cancun

-

Nice clean resort, beach was pretty good, actually probably better than most in

Cancun

because it was larger.  They had people on the beach and pools serving drinks and cleaning.  Food buffets were not as good as Barcelo (obviously), but adequate.  Tips for others: Get upgraded to a black wristband VIP status (we were able to get it for free, my husband told them it was his birthday, which it was and they granted it for free).  The VIP status allows you to eat at two of the ala carte restaurants at the sister resort, The Royal, right next door.  They were awesome.  We ate at both of them twice.  Also, the status allows access to the 6th floor lounge which has free internet and computers to use, premium liquor for you to self serve, 24 hour snacks.  Because the resort was so reasonable, we felt like we could eat off site as well.  Directly behind the resort was a great local seafood restaurant, Lorenzillo's.  It is a very nice upscale place with lagoon view.  Great seafood, drinks and atmosphere.  We went there for dinner once and appetizers two other times.  Great oysters.Wise to get reservations the night before eating there.  Very popular and great service.  Just a block down from our resort, Bubba Gumps, outback steakhouse, Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville and several shopping centers within 15 minutes walking or 5 minutes on the bus which only cost .$75.  The easiest way to get around quickly. For couples only, I would recommend The Royal.  Adult only, very, very nice.  The beach is smaller but you can use the Gran Caribe's beach next door, everything is very close and convenient.  I would recommend the Gran Caribe to families with small children, they have a nice play area and pool.  Not so much for teenagers, no disco or evening entertainment.  Private transportation was really nice both ways.....
