Morocco with Abercrombie & Kent

My husband and I were lucky enough to be offered the Bursch Travel American Express Rep Excellence Award trip this year and the destination was Morocco!

We spent our first two nights in Casablanca. We did a city tour that included a stop at the 3rd largest mosque in the world, which was spectacular.  We also had to visit Rick’s Café and listen to the piano player.  Even though there really wasn’t a Rick’s Café in Casablanca during the war, it did a good job of making us feel we were in the movie.

We then met our Abercrombie & Kent tour guide and spent the remainder of the week at the Four Seasons Hotel Marrakech.   The city is called the “Pink City” because of the color of the local earth used in its construction.  The city is beautiful with lovely boulevards, gardens and palm trees against the sand colored buildings.  The food was outstanding.  Very fresh and wonderful flavors with all the fresh spices they have available.

The highlight of the trip was our overnight trip to the Sahara Desert.  We flew over the Atlas Mountains to the northeast corner of Morocco where the Sahara Desert begins.  We formed a caravan of jeeps and headed towards the Erg Chebbi sand dunes.  We stopped to view the Ziz Valley, which is rich with date palms.  We also visited a fossil factory where we saw how they cut the huge rocks to reveal millions of fossils.

After an off-road ride through the desert, we boarded camels for the final part of our journey to our A & K Desert Tented Camp.  That evening we enjoyed a wonderful Morocco dinner and entertainment around the fire.  The next morning we were up early to watch the sun rise over the Sahara Desert sand dunes.

Morocco is a very interesting country to visit with rich history and traditions.  It truly was a remarkable experience and one that I would highly recommend to others.
